Westhaven Marina

Officially Westhaven Marina is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere according to wikipedia, however the Westhaven website concludes they are only 'one of'. 2,000 berth strong it is home to many sailing yachts which give Auckland its nickname "City of Sails".

My interest in the area again comes from how it looks at night. Great for night shots over water with reflections.

Britomart Transport Centre

From an early morning mission with another photographer. These shots are centred around the Britomart Transport Centre including crossings, the newspaper dealer, columns holding up the bus shelter, and the lift door to the underground train platform.

St Patrick's Square

These shots are from two different nights with my photographer friends. It was freezing cold, and I had to leave for the night because my fingers could not work the camera anymore. This was my motivation to buy fingerless gloves which are proving very useful for night photography.

Enjoy these photos, the square has an interesting light and water feature which is relatively recent; and I can't pass up an opportunity to take long exposures of water!

Stormy Twilight

Twilight is a beautiful time of the day (despite "Twilight" the word being tarnished by pop culture). These two were shot here.

Hobson Street

Views of Hobson Street at night including St Matthew's in the City.

Runway

Every chance I get I go to the observation area off the end of runway 23R at Auckland International Airport. This is normally when I take someone to the airport or pick them up, and usually part of the journey will involve me taking a photo of their aircraft taking off or landing. I find this handy to see when the busy times are, and this to see which way the wind is blowing (the planes take off and land into the wind).

These pictures are from early this morning, before what has turned out to be a particularly dreary and nasty day weather wise.

I love the feeling I get from such photos, as for me going to the airport reminds me that I am on my way to somewhere nicer where the sun is shining.

And up above those clouds, it's as bright as day...

Here are a couple from a different day when the sun was shining:
